CHAPTER 13

‘Everything is as hoped, Captain. There are no ships in the bay,’ the scouts announced when they climbed on deck.

The Seagull had arrived, under cover of darkness, near the island of Tamaris and the Mask had sent men to spy on the little village from afar. Now they had returned bearing good news. The sea was smiling favourably on the freedom fighters.

Once they dropped anchor inside the bay, the crew lowered the longboats in which they loaded several long chests and hand-bound slaves. Under heavy guard, the slaves were thrown unceremoniously into the middle of the longboats.

Arriving at the beach, they saw Lord Tamaris waiting for them, wearing a broad smile and escorted by a handful of guards.

‘Welcome, Captain, welcome. What do you have there?’ he enquired impatiently.

‘I bring many surprises, my Lord,’ Leandros replied, offering Tamaris a deep bow. ‘Many slaves and lots of moonstones. Please wait until my crew has unloaded everything.’

‘You’ve been true to your word, Captain. I can’t wait to see what you have for me,’ Tamaris said greedily.

The pirates herded the slaves onto the beach and deposited the long chests near the two men.

‘Look, my Lord, excellent quality moonstones,’ Leandros announced, opening a chest filled with large moonstones.

Lord Tamaris and his guards gathered around the chest looking mesmerised, commenting on the quality of the moonstones. When Tamaris turned to Leandros, he found a knife touching his neck. His guards found themselves surrounded by menacing pirates with cutlasses drawn.

‘What is this?’ Tamaris stammered.

‘Business, my Lord,’ Leandros said dryly. ‘Not another word, unless you wish to have another mouth opening at your throat. You know what to do,’ he told his pirates.

While Tamaris and his men were led, bound and gagged, on a longboat heading for the Seagull, Leandros led his men silently into the village. Building after building was quietly searched and those found resting there were bound and gagged.

‘I can see the lookouts running to the mines. We’d better hurry to get there first,’ Dolfo told Leandros.

‘You’re right, Dolfo. Not a minute to lose. Let’s go.’

Carrying the heavy chests, pirates and slaves rushed towards the mines. They hoped to get there before the lookouts and surprise the overseers.

The long procession arrived first at the entrance to the mines, only to be met by several heavily armed overseers.

‘Halt, what’s this?’ one of them shouted.

‘Slaves and moonstones, compliments of Lord Tamaris,’ Leandros announced, opening his arms wide to show he was unarmed. ‘We were told to deliver them here.’

The slaves, heads down, continued to advance, carrying the chests under the supervision of the pirates.

‘How come you’re all alone? Where’s my Lord?’ the overseer asked suspiciously.

‘Lord Tamaris is appraising the moonstones,’ Leandros answered, kneeling by a chest and opening it to exhibit the shining stones.

With the attention of the overseers on Leandros and the chest, the slaves had arrived near them. Putting down the rest of the chests, the other pirates bent over to unlock them. Their easy manners posed no threat to the alarmed overseers.

Within seconds, the slaves had untied their hands and were retrieving tridents from the chests.
